Delhi

Delhi, the seat of the Government of India is said to have been devastated seven times and re-established again and again as the principal seat of the might and magnificence of India during its centuries old chequered history. One of the fastest growing cities in the world, today, Delhi has spread far beyond the Mughal era Shahjahanabad and was ordained as the capital of British India in 1911. Remnants of the past sit jovially with the modern skyscrapers, bustling commercial complexes and residential colonies. The important sites are the Red Fort, Qutub Minar, and Humayun’s Tomb, apart from the modern monuments of Lutyens Delhi.

Punjab

Though Chandigarh remains the state capital, its principal city is Amritsar, founded by the 4^th Sikh Guru, Guru Ramdas during the 16th century. The Golden Temple at Amritsar is worth a visit, as is the crystal clear pool surrounding the Temple. The water of this pool is reported to have miraculous healing powers.

Haryana

The State of Haryana came into existence in 1966 when it was carved out of Punjab. It shares its capital with Punjab at Chandigarh. Kurukshetra, which hosted the epic battle of Mahabharata and the site of Lord Krishna’s discourse to Arjun, viz., the immortal Srimad Bhagavad Geeta, is located here, which has lately been developed as a major emporium for various handicrafts of India. It also boasts of the historic battlefield of Panipat, which saw 3 major battles which altered the course of Indian History.

Chandigarh

Located in the foothills of Shivalik hills, Chandigarh was designed by the French architect Le Corbusier during early 1950’s. It is one of a few totally planned cities in the country and worth a visit. Pinjore Gardens, developed by Mughal Emperor Jahangir are just at its periphery, while the ‘Rock Garden’ near Sukhna Lake is worth a visit.
